Natural Sleep Aids
Are you sleeping badly? Then you are not alone. Sleep seems to be a precious commodity these days, and we are sleeping less and less. We are being encouraged to work harder and longer hours. This does not really help at all, and we should be including some natural sleep aids in our daily life. Sleeping well has lifelong health benefits.
Lifestyle and sleep
Yes, your lifestyle does affect your sleep quality. If you work really long hours and never relax, your brain just don’t get a chance to produce the chemicals which are known to help us sleep. As a matter of fact, this kind of lifestyle is very dangerous and can cause all sorts of health problems. Poor sleep is even associated with a higher risk of heart attacks and diseases such as cancer.
Sleeping is important aspect of health and we often ignore the importance of sleep. We should really make sleep a priority and not put it on the back burner like we so often do.
Dejunk your bedroom
You don’t need to take your phone, iPad and lap top into your bedroom. Leave them in the living room, or in your home office, and go to bed to sleep.
It is easy to turn the heating up in your home, but sometimes you just need to turn it down. To sleep well, your bedroom should not really be too warm. Turn the thermostat down so the bedroom is about 18 Celsius and you will sleep a lot better.
Have a snack
Believe it or not but your body needs energy to sleep. When we sleep all sort of processes go on in our body. The body is really busy when you sleep, and to make sure that all of those process take place, it needs energy.
A milky drink along with some oat cookies works well. Add some honey to your milky drink, and you will sleep even better. Honey is rich in the amino acid tryptophan which helps the body to produce melatonin.
Should we sleep more?
The fact is that we should sleep more. We should learn to appreciate the beauty and health benefits of an afternoon nap. This really helps to reset the body clock and increase our energy levels. You will often will better and have better concentration after an afternoon nap.
Having pets sleeping in your bedroom do not qualify as natural sleep aids, although my 13 year old daughter does not let a Doberman and a little Yorkie affect her sleep. They are tucked in with their own blankets and sleep comfortably on her bed all night. But then again, it is said that teenagers could sleep through almost anything, even Yorkshire terriers that snore.
